BWE Blood Drive

There will be a BLOOD DRIVE held at BWE, Monday, September 19th, from 10:00am until 8:00pm in the gymnasium in special honor of Matt DeMint and PJ Bennett. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Please consider giving the gift of life. There will be more information about this event at Curriculum Night, and you will be able to sign up for an appointment at the "Donation Table" which will be set up in the foyer of the school.  You may also sign up online by clicking here.

Science Quiz

There will be an ecosystems quiz Friday, September 2nd. Students have a homework assignment tonight that we will go over in class tomorrow, which will serve as a study guide. In addition they should use their vocabulary sheet and pages B28-31 in their science books for review.

Science - Week of September 5th

Vocabulary Words of the Week: producer, consumer, decomposer, food chain, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, energy pyramid, food web.

This week we are learning about food chains and will be designing different food chains to gain further understanding of the concept.

Tuesday - Class discussion. No homework.
Wednesday - Continue class discussion on food chains. Categorize organisms into different groups of producers, consumer, and decomposers. Homework tonight - Food Chains worksheet, Activities 2 and 3 due tomorrow.
Thursday - Discuss energy pyramids and how energy is transferred from one organism to another. Continue constructing food chains.
Friday - Use knowledge of food chains to create food webs.

Please check your child's agenda each day for upcoming assignments.

Curriculum Night

Just a reminder that the BWE Curriculum Night will he held Thursday, September 1, 2011. For your convenience there will be two identical sessions, one from 5-5:45 and another from 6-6:45. We will discuus curriculum, academic and social expectations, and asnswer any questions that you may have concerning the 5th grade year!

Assignments:
Tuesday, 8/30: Write each word in a sentence. Underline the spelling word. Be sure to include correct punctuation and capitalization. Skip a line between each sentence. You may use up to two spelling words in each sentence. Due Thursday, 9/1.

Wednesday, 8/31 Divide each word into syllables. Write the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) Skip lines between each one. Use a reference source as your guide. An example is: knapsack knap-sack (noun) Due Thursday, 9/1.

Thursday, 9/1 Create a word search puzzle that includes a key using all the spelling words. A blank word search puzzle will be provided. Due Tuesday, 9/6.

Friday, 9/2 Study words over the weekend for a test on Tuesday, 9/6. Your test will include spelling each word correctly, identifying the parts of speech of some words and choosing 3 words to write in sentences.

Firchau: Language Arts (Week of August 29)

WRITING
This week we will introduce the writing process to the students and begin to look at the process steps in detail, beginning with prewriting. We will also explore declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences.

READING
This week we will begin reading the novel, The Sign of the Beaver.

SPELLING
Most of our spelling this year will be derived from vocabulary contained in the novels we read. The intruction and assesment will be widely varied and use many differentiated strategies of learning and expression.

Mrs. Hoge's Language Arts Class - Week of September 5, 2011

Reading  We have started the Newbery Award winning novel From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg this week. The novel is about a young girl named Claudia who decides to run away from her home in Connecticut to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. But she needs someone to accompany her, so she convinces her younger brother Jamie to go with her. The adventure begins!
We will finish reading and discussing Chapters Two and Three, pages 19-42. Please ask your child to tell you about what they have read.

Vocabulary words from these chapters include:

Writing assignments Our focus will be on identifying subjects and predicates in as we read through the novel.  We will also be looking for different parts of speech, particularly nouns and verbs, to make the connection between subjects and predicates.
Students are also working on independent writing activities, using the writing process.

Corven's Language Arts Class- Week of August 29th

Reading
We will start the school year reading the novel, Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Shiloh is a Newbery Medal book about a boy named Marty Preston and a young beagle that he finds in the hills behind his home. When Marty finds Shiloh, it's love at first sight, and also big trouble for Marty.
Our reading focus this week will be chapters 1-4 of Shiloh.

Spelling
Each week our spelling words will be important vocabulary found in the novels that we read. This week our spelling/vocabulary words come from chapters 1-4 of Shiloh. On Thursday, the students will be quizzed over both the definition and the spelling of the following 10 words:
scolding, detour, cringe, abandon, impatient, squeal, sickle, feeble, spare, thumps

Writing
Declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences will be the focus this week in writing. We will find these four different types of sentences as we read Shiloh. The students will also work in groups to create all four types of sentences.

Language Arts Homework
Monday & Tuesday- Shiloh chapters 1&2 comprehension sheet due Wednesday.

MATH-Week of August 29th

We begin unit 1 of Everyday Math on Monday. Our focus this week will be on creating arrays to illustrate multiplication number models. In addition, we will also learn the difference between prime and composite numbers.

WOW! It has been a wonderful summer. We can't wait for school to start!

9:00-9:40 – Special
The special schedule will start on Thursday, August 25, which is a "B" day. Students will go through the Special classes on a three day rotation. The schedule for each homeroom is as follows ...

Corven: A: Art, B: Music, C: P.E.

Hoge: A, P.E., B: Art, C: Music

Firchau: A: Music; B: Gym; C: Art

The fifth grade will use the restroom after each special class.

Each day the students will rotate through Math, Science, and Social Studies on the following schedule ...
