Corven's Language Arts Class- Week of August 29th

Reading
We will start the school year reading the novel, Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Shiloh is a Newbery Medal book about a boy named Marty Preston and a young beagle that he finds in the hills behind his home. When Marty finds Shiloh, it's love at first sight, and also big trouble for Marty.
Our reading focus this week will be chapters 1-4 of Shiloh.

Spelling
Each week our spelling words will be important vocabulary found in the novels that we read. This week our spelling/vocabulary words come from chapters 1-4 of Shiloh. On Thursday, the students will be quizzed over both the definition and the spelling of the following 10 words:
scolding, detour, cringe, abandon, impatient, squeal, sickle, feeble, spare, thumps

Writing
Declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences will be the focus this week in writing. We will find these four different types of sentences as we read Shiloh. The students will also work in groups to create all four types of sentences.

Language Arts Homework
Monday & Tuesday- Shiloh chapters 1&2 comprehension sheet due Wednesday.
**Study spelling/vocabulary for quiz on Thursday.
